The Pew Research Center has conducted a study of the global population of centenarians, those over 100 years old. Today, there are about half a miilion centenarians worldwide. According to projections, by 2050 there will be 3.7 million. Since 1990 the older segment of the over 65 population - 80 and above - has grown more rapidly than those 65-79. China, Japan, the U.S., Italy and India are expected to have the largest numbers of people over 100 by 2050. There is precedent for segment growth at the older end. United Nations figures for the period from 1950 to 2015 shows the portion of the U.S. population at age 65 rose from less than 8 million to almost 20 million. As life expectancies rise, and along with that better health at more advanced age, a number of changes in life planning and behavior occur.
