How Americans & Europeans Differ

Happenings: Mailinglists.com

Europeans and Americans share many values and traits. From the Bill of Rights to the European Union the commonalities are many. However, a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center reveals there are differences by degree on several important issues. For example, Americans have a far more entrenched and fervent sense of individualism, especially when it comes to following their life path. They also exude a greater commitment to the idea that hard work equals success, as long as the government doesn’t interfere. Europeans as a whole are more accepting of the role of government in ensuring that the entire population is cared for at least in terms of basic necessities. U.S. respondents claim religion has a significant role in their lives than their European counterparts, yet Americans are the least tolerant of adultery. Americans are far more tolerant of the right to express views that members of minorities and religions find offensive. Overall, the right of free speech and expression regardless of propriety is held more dear on our side of the pond.
