Pew Research: Evangelical & Born Again Voters

Happenings: Mailinglists.com

Pew Center for Research examines the impact of self-identified born again and evangelical Christian voters in the 2016 campaign. For example, exit polls show large numbers of Donald Trump supporters identifying as such. Yet exit polls are not conducted in a way that truly screens for born again or evangelical characteristics. The Pew 2014 Religious Landscape Study compiled detailed geographic and demographic profiles including frequency of church attendance, degree of orthodoxy, and propensity to share their faith. These findings are potentially at odds with the actual behavior of exit poll respondents according to the Pew researchers. The authors include references to some who feel that the term "evangelical" has been co-opted for political purposes. The implications are that the documented values of those who identify as born again and evangelical may not actually sync with those claiming to be so at the polls.
