Women in the U.S. and the world over are having their first children at an older age. In a report from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, spanning the period from 2000-2014, the average age at first birth increased from 24.9 to 26.3 in the U.S., with the greatest increase between 2009-2014. The report builds on earlier work reported for the years 1970-2000, and show a continuing trend. Factors include fewer teen mothers, plus more women delaying child bearing past 30 to pursue work and careers, out of choice or necessity after the Great Recession. Subsequent births are then occurring at shorter intervals as the "window" closes. Financial uncertainty has always influenced big decisions such as housing, automobiles, and children.
