While English is the "euro" of U.S. discourse, language heritage - spoken or appreciated - represents a price of entry into the hearts and minds of ethnic communities. During a recent Presidential debate, a spat between Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz erupted over whether Mr. Cruz spoke Spanish. The point was heated since each claims deep ties to the Latino community. The Pew Center for Research recently conducted a survey among those of Hispanic extraction, both immigrants and U.S. born. Across the board, respondents felt it was important to preserve some vital aspect of linguistic heritage. Similarly, in a Pew study of Asian-Americans conducted in 2012, 80% felt is was somewhat important to keep their language alive.
