The Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) has granted a request for an August hearing on the effects of postal rate increases. The request was made by a group of organizations representing high volume direct mail senders. This stems from the exigent price increase granted by the PRC earlier this year, which relied heavily on a report issued by the Inspector General's Office that leaned toward inelasticity, or the ability to realize increased revenue from such price increases without a loss in volume. It is the contention of the mailers that current econometric models used to determine price elasticity (or inelasticity) of mail usage for major classes of mail do not reflect a changing reality.
