Beginning this holiday season, The USPS will deliver packages for Amazon on Sunday in the New York City and Los Angeles metro areas. So for now, the NY and LA markets will enjoy 7 day delivery of their Amazon purchases. More service areas will be rolled out throughout 2014. The new delivery schedule taps into one of the few bright spots in the USPS portfolio of services. Since 2008 their volume of package delivery has increased to about 3.5 billion pieces, contributing about $11.6 billion in revenue to the agency. This expansion of service comes at a time when Congress has blocked a petition on the part of the USPS to cease Saturday delivery as a cost cutting measure. Still unanswered is what form of relief - if any - Congress will provide to the USPS regarding the annual $5.5 billion unfunded mandate regarding payouts to the future retiree health fund.
