As of July 1, any sender of email, texts and even some social media postings to Canadian recipients must obtain consent, implied or express depending on the prior relationship. As the deadline for opt-in approached, inboxes were stuffed with last minute requests by senders to allow contact to continue. Interestingly, while the measure is sure to have an impact on the usual run of the mill spam it targets, an unintended consequence seems to be the tepid response that legitimate organizations are encountering. Opt in rates as low as 10% may cause serious erosion of email lists held by nonprofits and charities for example.
