Protecting Personal Data From Online Leaks

Headlines: Data Industry

Researchers at MIT have developed an encryption system that would prevent data from becoming available to hackers, or governments. It's called Mylar, and if it sticks (sorry) it could be a game changer for data protection. The key is that data is encrypted in the user's browser and stays that way on the server. It can ony be decrypted by a user who possesses the password. A real-world trial is underway at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Boston where some patients are using a Mylar-enabled website to collect medical history information. Patient data is only decrypted when viewed by the patient or his doctor. If that small trial is successful, it will be rolled out more widely.
