FTC: List Brokers Are Data Brokers

Headlines: Data Industry

In a report just released by the FTC, the commission determined that list brokers should be regarded in the same way as data brokers. As a result, list brokers would fall under the jurisdiction of regulatory measures that the FTC is asking Congress to enact. They would be required to self identify as data brokers, an reveal how they collect and use data, plus various means by which consumers could get data that has been captured and determine if it is to be suppressed. Also enforced would be the ability of consumers to see if any assumptions (predictive analysics)  are being made about them by age, race or ethnicity. In objecting to the report, the direct marketing industry vigorously defends its self-regulatory capacity.
