Home Is Where The (Adult) Kids Are

Happenings: Mailinglists.com

For the first time in a very long time, more adults age 18-34 are living with their parents than with a spouse or significant other. Going back to around 1880, the prevalent domestic situation for young adults was shared with a spouse or partner in a household of their own. This arrangement peaked around 1960 at 62%. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, 2014 saw this number dip to 31.4%, below the 32.1% living with parents. (This is not the all-time high - 35% -  which occurred in 1940.) Many factors seem to be contributing to this trend; lack of a college degree, delaying marriage, fallout from the Great Recession, and a general decline in employment rates for young men among them.

Mailing List Ideas: The increase in young adults living with parents has the potential to affect how direct mail marketers reach this group with offers relevant to their situation. Many may have created new businesses and work from home as they develop, or started small home businesses. Still more are prime targets for educational outreach. Survey statistics reveal a disparity regarding members of minority communities, being a potential workforce resource for minority owned businesses.
