The practice of mobile data gathering in the context of data privacy may be re-set. A startup initiative named CrowdSignals is seeking to enlist the aid of willing participants to allow data to be collected via smart devices (phones, watches, etc.) Privacy-focused standards for opting out, anonymizing data and third party use have been created. The data sets will span a wide range of daily activities. The purpose is to compile enough data to help researchers and businesses develop better machine learning algorithms for use in mobile applications and social contexts. A pilot effort is under way to enlist the initial data gathering cohort. Participants will be paid small sums for the relatively brief (30 day) study period. An Indiegogo campaign has been launched to get sponsorship and financial support for the researchers and technical infrastructure. Ultimately the data sets will be made available via license to researchers and the business community.
Mailing List Ideas: The data sets could be valuable to app developers marketing to businesses and organizations in computing, journalism, public health, social science, and urban planning efforts. The U.S. Business Database from D&B covers it all. Reach the education market with insight based algorithmic products by using the MDR Educators from D&B database. The SIC Reference Directory organizes all mailing list opportunities by industry group.
