The Food and Drug Administration has issued new guidelines and recommendation aimed at controlling the potential spread of the Zika virus borne by infected human tissues and tissue-based products. This affects medical, surgical and reproductive procedures ranging from blood donation and transfusion, to stem cell and gestational products, and more. Extended periods of ineligibility are being recommended for potential donors who may have been exposed to the Zika virus. Tissues harvested from deceased persons are also affected by the guidelines.
