The Hard Stats On Distracted Driving

Happenings: Mailinglists.com

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute has published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (subscription) that measures the effects of driving distractions. The Second Strategic Highway Research Program Naturalistic Driving Study took place in real world situations over a period of years, tabulating and analyzing the occurrence of actual crashes. The degree of severity ranges from considerable (reaching for anything) to extreme (intoxication) and all distractions in between such as texting. The resulting statistics are sobering. After all these are things almost all of us do. The real value of this work lies in getting the word out.
